I have just spent two weeks in the Kimberley.
In Winjana Gorge were lots of crocodiles. Luckily they were fresh water crocs and relatively harmless but to see so many in one place was surprising.

These penguin chicks are so tiny, they each weighed 30grams. Its that time of the year again, penguins pairing up, laying eggs and generally getting into spring fever.

This weaving contains a photo of the reeds and grasses before they were picked. I intend taking photos of this piece as it gradually dries. then I will make it into the front cover of a book containing the gradual drying process along with some appropriate words.
I have also been making baskets...not your traditional beautifully crafted baskets but baskets with character, containing reeds, grasses, silver birch stems and various raw silks. Photos coming soon.

Computer time has been limited to data processing of penguin histories etc. but today its almost finished and I have time to update the blog.
I was supposed to be teaching rowing this cold but crisp and sunny morning. Only a few people turned up so we got the pair out and thoroughly enjoyed an hour of blissful exercise on a calm lake with almost no other boats to dodge.
It was certainly better than last Tuesday rowing at night on dark stormy water.
My other activities for the last few weeks have been setting traps for rakali and emptying them early mornings. We got a really cute baby the other day. We also managed to catch the big alpha male twice. Some of them in one area worked out how to remove the bait without setting off the trap. Or maybe it was just one character going round collecting a free dinner.
I must find out the subject for illustration Friday and get drawing. My art work at the moment has been confined to making a table centrepiece of the breakwater with penguins on it. I have been making the penguins out of Lyra Keremiplast. Its very easy to work with and I have a collection of penguins waiting to be painted.

Autumn and the Eucalypts are in bloom. The paths are strewn with these pretty flowers and the rain creates strings of raindrops on the grasses
Its cool weather and the indigenous vegetation comes alive. There are also strange fungi under the trees on the beach and the salt marsh is flooded.

doctors are hopeless

I went to the doctor two months ago with a sore eye....very simple ...just got a red eye.
I felt extremely fit and healthy and was rowing at least three times a week and doing training.
That's when it started. He decided I had high blood pressure and should do something about it.
Since then I never felt well, each type of medication seems to have side effects worse than the last and I can barely walk more than a few metres after simple exercise.
I have been off the last set of pills for a week now and managed to go rowing yesterday but my body feels like a rag and my brain keeps seizing up.
The eye has only just got better.
I have thrown in the towel with that doctor and will be visiting a specialist next week.
I JUST WANT MY LIFE BACK

Last night there was a 20 knot Northerly and a big swell but we took the quad out anyway and somehow despite the very bumpy water we had a wonderful row.
We seemed to be in absolute unison from the very first stroke and the feeling of unity with boat, rowers and water was one of those magic occasions.
We did not stop after the first lap but just kept going the feeling was so good.
This morning it was very different. Lovely weather, flat water but a beginner in the crew kept us off balance for the first 2 kilometres.
Tomorrow I have a class of school kids. That will be chaotic but pleasurable to know they have experienced a new way of enjoying water.

This photo was taken inside the luminarium. It is a strange plastic domed maze lit by the sunlight shining through coloured walls.
A truly "other" world which silenced a difficult grandchild whose eyes lit up in wonder at the experience.
Outside the sun and sea were another joy to behold as we settled down to collecting shells and bouncing in and out of the water.

Melbourne is staging a festival along with the commonwealth games. Strange things are happening.
They are building a wrecked boat on the beach.
Trams have become vibrantly decorated.
Trees are walking.
It's all good fun and the acrobats, fire eaters, dancers and glass eaters all add to the excitement.
A trip into town a very nice day out.

I cannot disassocaite myself enough from reality this week to complete the assigned task but I certainly managed it two weeks ago.
This fish is the result of making all the slabs of clay ready to make an art deco vase. I sat there looking at the pieces and thought....why another vase?
Gradually from nowhere this fish materialised.
A fish with teeth, a fish with attitude and rebellion.
Is this the real me?

6am and out rowing. The water is absolutely flat, the sun is not up, the swans are asleep and all is serene. Then suddenly to our astonishment the sky lit up with curtains of colour. Just briefly. But enough to make a fabulous morning into a stunning scene.

After visiting the most recent exhibition of Aboriginal art, I looked at the landscape through their eyes.I took a piece of canvas covered it with PVA and spread yellow and red pigment on it. I covered this with a tissue and did a few strokes with green glitter. I waited until it dried then I set light to it.
This covered your criteria of see, touch, smell and hear. Taste was missing until I looked at the fruit bowl and saw mangos and blueberries.These are represented in the water colour backgrounds.

Well I got up on time. There I was at 7am and there was no sign of the rocks or the heavy machinery.
Had a look for any resident penguins that may need to be moved, came back and there it was at the start of the pier, this enormous rock mover.
It proved to be only just wide enough to go up the pier.Turning the corner to get onto the breakwater was a feat that gave me great respect for the driver.
His skill and the delicacy with which he moved rocks was mind blowing.
The penguins have nothing to fear.

RAIN! It poured in torrents. I was on a main road, the traffic was driving extremely slowly, it was hard to see where I was going and suddenly this large huntsman spider appeared on the wind screen.Yes inside the van, at eye level, staring at me.
It waved a leg or two then settled down.
I spoke nicely to it and told it to stay still and it seemed to understand the situation because it stayed there quietly for the rest of the journey then quietly slipped back into the air vent when I stopped.
I have not seen it since and I hope it happily keeps hidden for the rest of it's sojourn in the van.
I know they are relatively harmless but they are BIG and it was a bit of a surprise.

A perfect day weatherwise. Cool calm morning up to 27C during the day and not too much of a sea breeze at night.
A hot air ballon almost scraped our roof top but managed to land in the football pitch nearby.That got the cats worried, both sat there with ears back and whiskers akimbo.
In the morning I did my usual row but this week in a double rather than a quad, so it was a bit more work to travel the 10k or so but the body stood up to the punishment. The lake was very busy, every one is working up for the coming regattas.
After a short bike ride hunger struck so it was into the bananas, nuts and bread and a short relaxation in the studio.
Then off to the money raising cricket match for the Sacred Heart Mission, There were some good bands playing there as well as good entertainment on the pitch. The sun was full up by now and I was wishing I had put sun sceen on the backs of my legs.
The helicopters were getting annoying and I could have done without the overhead air display but when I got home the frogs in my backyard were in good voice. There's nothing like a helicopter to get them going.
In the evening it was penguin research and we had enough people to run three teams so we finished before midnight for a change.
The penguins are mostly in moulting mode and there are feathers everywhere, but there are still a few chicks coming on and their parents are still feeding them. It will be about four weeks before the last of the chicks fledge.We are using lots of microchips, there must be a lot of visiting penguins, but it means we will have to find $1000 soon to buy more,At $10 each they are an expensive item.
Its another lovely day today but I think a less active one is in order. There is only so much a 70 year old body can stand.

Hundreds of tiny spiders

Those spiders I mentioned a couple of weeks back have obviously been very busy. All these cute tiny creatures suddenly appeared out of a matted web.They will now be finding accomodation in the reeds and ferns of my tiny frog swamp although a few will probably end up inside the frogs.

Sunday and quad rowing early morning.
It was magically misty and launching ourselves out into the still water was a real treat. We rowed effortlessly and took a scenic route around the small islands all quietly peaceful in the morning calm.
We treated ourselves to coffee and muffins at the restaurant and wallowed in the good team spirit.
After lunch I met some old university friends at the specialist chocolate cafe.
We yarned for two and a half hours about our art work and then looked at a couple of exhibitions.
Great to catch up and find we are all still creating work even though the number of works have decreased. I am trying to create small items these days there are only so many canvasses you can store, and I am really happy with my small, wry, books.

In the evening it was the regular pengiun research night .
The penguins were starting to moult so they either looked very messy, like a burst feather pillow or very fat ready to start the moult.
The penguin photo above is of one very heavy female. She was 2000 grams plus. The scales only went to 2000.That is twice the average weight.She will certainly have no trouble moulting.
We microchipped lots of fledgelings. They looked very smart in their brand new plumage.
Finished around midnight, I suppose that is what you would call a very long nice day out.

Well...we learned something last night. Don't take the eight out with only six rowers when there is a howling southerly.
It seemed OK as we took off but there were also lots of yachts out on the water and rowers give way to yachts.
We could barely control the boat let alone turn it or bring it to a dead stop.So there we were with yachts buzzing backward and forward across our path and the odd other smaller, stronger rowing team, and us trying to avoid everything including the fountain in the middle of the lake.
We managed to do a complete circuit of the lake....about 5 kilometres, but then instead of being sensible and coming in we decided to try another circuit.
We got completely out of control and ended up in the mud and reeds.
We couldn't row out and the wind was too strong for one person to push it out so we all jumped out and pushed it around a slight bend until we could get some traction on bow side.Then one person stayed in the water while the rest of us jumped in while we were pushed out.
This meant that we now had five rowers and a cox in the eight. We put three on bowside in the bow end and two at stroke in the stern end and did an almightly heave to get the thing going.Luckily it suceeded and we did a very strong pull for about 300 metres to get it back into the landing.
The only trouble was we did not come in backwards and had to turn the eight to get it in the shed. This was not easy in the wind and very cramped landing space and not one runner offered to help even though they could not pass us.
Not an event I would like to repeat but all ended well and it's calm this morning and the sun is shining, so off I go again on my bike to row a few more circuits.

Well summer is really here, 42C yesterday, but the mornings and evenings can still be used for outdoor activities.Rowing the quad was a bit harder than usual with the Northerly wind and the general lassitude brought on by the temperature and lack of sleep, but it was enjoyable. We made an awful mess of the landing in the high wind and could easily have cracked the boat but someone up there was smiling on us and both we, and the boat landed unscathed.
When the cool change arrived early evening it was time for a dip in the briney along with everyones dog...or so it seemed.

Played bass inthe jazz band Monday night for three hours, the only trouble was I also did some practice during the day..... My left thumb just aches and aches.....then to top it of I went rowing Tuesday night. I thought I would be OK sweeping in stroke but no......My left thumb just aches and aches........ But lets face it I thoroughly enjoyed the activities and I am up for more punishment this morning. The sun is shining, there's very little wind and it will be wonderful on the water.

Another beautiful day in my life. I went to swim with the dolphins. It was a cool but clear and windless day. The sea sparkled and invited us to wallow behind the boat and sing while the dolphins swam along to inspect us. The sheer magic of having wildlife look at us rather than the other way round was a delight. One stopped, looked very carefully at me and opened it's eye wide. I wonder what thoughts it had about this black and yellow wet suited human, singing strangely pitched songs through a snorkel. We also swam with the seals who floated all around us with one flipper in the air above the water.
After three hours of cruising, swimming and singing we headed back to shore and sat on the beach eating lunch.By now the sun was full up and warm so we wandered up to the old hotel on the cliffs above and downed a couple of beers. The general easy feeling persuaded us to spend money on pretty beaded jewellery in the adjacent gallery. Later we walked out onto the old jetty wearing our coloured beads where some children were swinging their feet over the edge. Hence the photo.

My garden is fullof spiders, especially leaf curl spiders. Where do the leaf curl spiders go for the rest of the year? Do they have a curled leaf in some corner of the garden which they string between two bushes a this time of the year. There are also bird dropping spiders, jumping spiders and huntsmen. I hope they are feeding on the mosquitos which are beginning to make their presence felt.
On the Breakwater there were St Andrew's Cross spiders probably feeding on the many moths and tiny blue butterflies out there.
Summer is with us and living between the beach and the lake is idyllic.

Two rows this week so far with lovely flat water. On Sunday I went out with the quad and today with the sweep four.We had the lake to ourselves on Sunday (New Years Day)not many hardy souls were about then but today the place was full of skullers.It is lovely out there early morning and the city skyline against the clear blue sky is so clear cut. There have not been many hot air balloons recently but when you see four or five of those gently floating by it makes the exertion of rowing seem far less.
Came back to reaarange the back yard with the new table and bench. They certainly give the whole place a lift. So much so I was cooerced into weeding the brick patio, but its not so hot today so I pruned the jungle of indigenous vegetation as well.The indigenous stuff certainly thrives no matter what the weather.

It is 4pm and 42.7C, not the weather to be out right now but I have been out most of the day. The sea temperature was hotter than the air temperature at 8am this morning 20.5C a sea and about 18 on the beach with a southerly wind. Swimming was just lovely but when we got out it was quite chilly sitting there in wet bathers and after the walk home a hot shower was needed.After that the vegie garden called so it was a trip to the plot and much watering of tomatoes etc. I picked the first of the red salad onions today they will be ideal for a cool summer dinner tonight.After lunch a tram ride to town and a visit to the William Morris exhibition. I seem to be getting an interest in patterns. I bought an Escher book just before Christmas and have been trying to work out his slip and reverse images.
Tonight I will get a tram into town around 11pm and sit by the river to watch the fireworks that will complete a very nice day out.

Summer has certainly arrived in a big way. Its 33C today and due to get hotter over the next week. I didn't go and water my vegetables yesterday and the tomatoes look as if they have been cooked. I have never seen them like this before but they are nearly red, slightly squishy and appear to have been boiled. Luckily the greener ones were OK so all is not lost.
Got up earlier today and cycled to the plot while it was still reasonably cool and soaked the vegies. There are so many zucchini and squash I am giving them away every day and yesterday I gave away about a kilo of green and yellow beans. Why do they all mature at the same time when they have been planted weeks apart. Picked 15 large tomatoes which seem to have survived the lack of water so they will be on the menu tonight with the roo steaks.
Went swimming in the sea this afternoon when the sea breeze kicked in. The water was really warm, there were no jellyfish and the jet skis were well off shore. FABULOUS
The sky was odd. On one side it was cirrus clouds and on the other cumulus but it has now broken up into little puffy whisps.
Looking forward to early morning swims for the next few weeks until the big blue jellies arrive.

Christmas

Well that is over for another year! There are so many hopes, so many joys and the occasional disaster, but we have all said hello again.
I wonder what it would be like if it was alcohol free?
Someone gave me a Margaita cocktail kit......they obviously gave that a great deal of thought!
The nicest bit was the walk on the beach with the sixyear old. He knew what to do.He walked straight into the water fully dressed and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

Fabulous morning. The water was still, the temperature was about 14C, fish were jumping, cygnets and ducklings everywhere. What more could you ask for. Who would train in a gym when there are these surroundings.
Did 5.5K power walk, ran up and down stairs, used the gym equipment around the path and felt a million dollars.
Still in euphoria,I did the market shopping and started baking for Christmas.The afternoon was fairly hot but it was pleasant in the garden so some of the weeds were demolished and the roses pruned. Evening was party time but the mosquitos were bad so I didn't stay late.
All in all not just a nice day out but a wonderful day out.

Breakwater

I feel like I am living with those penguins at present. Been up the breakwater 5 times this week. Monday night did the penguin run with limited help but picked up four dead ones that didn't survive the previous night's storm.One looked as if it had been hit by a flying rock. Finished around midnight with a Christmas celebration of mince pies and champagne...odd mixture but it was good after 3 hours work.
Tuesday walked up there again to take photos of the revegetation after the February storms. The Frankenia is coming back and with it the blue butterfies.The gate had been vandalised...AGAIN.
Wednesday had a visiting biologist so did another run along the 1.5k of rocks.Penguins everywhere, it seemed like every rock had a bird perched on it. Seagulls were squawking overhead there must be eggs somewhere.
Thursday water quality testing so up there again this time in daylight. The salt bush is starting to bloom, but there's a lot of dead bush that will need a working bee soon.
Went for a walk along the beach after lunch with a long time friend. Calm seas, gentle sunshine and drank a beautiful fruit juice of pineapple, orange and mango....That was the nice day out bit...Tomorrow it will be very hot but it's training next to the lake at 8am as usual. Hopefully the sun will not be too bad at that hour.

There was a stiff breeze early morning but not enough to prevent we die hards from rowing in rather choppy water. During the day the wind got up to about 30 knots and I reckon there were stronger gusts by evening.
Couldn't run the penguin research last night. We tried to get out there but just walking up the pier was very hard work. By the time we got onto the breakwater waves were splashing over the top. We stuck it out for about 20 minutes but by this time some huge waves had broken onto the rocks and we were absolutely soaked.We sat in the only tiny piece of shelter, weighed and chipped a couple of penguins and decided to try again tonight. Not able to have the jolly Christmas celebration we had anticpated for later in the night.
Actually that is not the only time the preChristmas celebration has been washed out. I can clearly remeber on a previous occasion eating Christmas pudding washed down with Southern Comfort all tasting decidedly of salt water as the waves broke over the top.

Walked 5.5 k with weights round the lake this morning in light rain. I thought I would get drenched but it seems to have done its thing before 8am. Faint sunshine now. The rakali had been eating yabbies overnight and I could see the remains on the path. Small clutches of ducklings were nestled in make shift nests on the banks and a couple of them were protected by mums. A single pelican has taken up residence and a spoonbill was in the reeds. The new surface of the path was treacherous it had collected a lot of water and was very slippery in places. The old path never did that but then this is here to impress the politicians.This afternoon I will walk with an older person and brave the mountainous beach and the trucks. I see they have buried the sea anemones in the beach replenishment. I wonder how many creatures they destroyed just digging up the shallows to make the mountains.

Today there are huge dunes on the beach.The sand that was deposited in the storms during February is being removed from the shallows and trucked along to the area that was denuded.
These mountains seem to be a great attraction for the sun worshippers who are working on their skin cancers at a raised level. Dogs are chasing up and down and the kite surfers look to be in somewhat cramped quarters.For myself, I just find walking along the beach a hazard as the enormous trucks grind their way through.
The usual nice day out for a stroll has become a nightmare.

This morning I went rowing on the local lake. It was sunny and the water was absolutely flat. Blissful conditions except with the water so flat there was no slacking off because you could clearly see the effort put into each stroke by the size of the puddles made by the oars.I rowed in a coxless quad for 12 kilometres and enjoyed every minute of it.
This afternoon I played in a jazz band in the park. It did not get to the 33C that was forecast which made life much easier. There were two santas, and one clown with green hair.....made me think that next session on Wednesday I should get out my red, green, orange and blue wig.
This evening I will be on the penguin count,that will top off a very nice day out.

kadavu

My most recent days out have been on the Fijian Island of Kadavu where I kayaked, snorkelled and lazed away my days.
I was interested to see the holes made by crabs.I have collected photos of holes in the ground elsewhere, but this time I was even able to photograph one or two occupants....a rare treat.
Underneath the mangroves it was dark and gloomy but on a sudden bend we came across a boat laden for market.
